Humbird Cemetery

This was the first cemetery in Sandpoint. Per an article in the Kootenai County Republic Newspaper dated Wednesday Oct 21, 1903, Undertaker Hunt exhumed the bodies from the old cemetery and moved them to Lakeview cemetery. He transferred eleven graves on Monday and thirteen graves on Tuesday.

The very first cemetery in Sandpoint was a strip of land lying along the Northern Pacific Railroad Company track which was donated to the Town of Sandpoint for burial purposes by a man named Ferguson who had homesteaded 160 acres along the Northern Pacific Track. His children consisted of Jim, Lottie, Hattie and Mike, but the family of Fergusons were never members of the old cemetery board.

In approximately 1893 the Humbird Lumber Company needed more land to expand so they purchased this piece of ground from the Montana Lumber Company (who owned the land near the cemetery) Humbird also purchased the cemetery. The Humbird Lumber company then purchased 5 acres of land from E. T. Vought for the purpose of moving the burials from the cemetery along the Northern Pacific Railroad track.

It appears the oldest burial is Father Barton in 1881. Information was gathered by Mary and Nellie Garrison from obituaries and death notifications from local newspapers furnished by the Bonner County Historical Museum.
Tombstone transcriptions of Lakeview Cemetery were completed by Mary and Nellie Garrison during July 2000. Updated 06-14-2001
